Michael Venter’s interest in photography began in 1968 with a borrowed Kodak range finder camera. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s he set-up up a home darkroom in association with Mark Adams. In the early 1970’s he used photography as teaching aid in Man Environment Studies lectures at the University of Auckland, School of Architecture. During the same period he helped develop, design and operate the Architectural Psychology Laboratory at the School of Architecture. The research facility integrated modular sets, lighting, video, audio and still photography. In the 1980’s he travelled and photographed extensively in Europe -including France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain. He was commissioned to photograph the Norwegian Frigg gas platforms in the Northern North Sea for the British Gas Corporation. Personnel projects included travel photography in London, Paris, Rhodes, Crete, Symi, Kos, Bruge, Northumbria, Malaysia and Singapore.
Since the introduction of digital cameras he has travelled and photographed extensively in New Zealand and created a library of images. Some of his work has involved photographing manufacturing, agricultural and horticultural sites to illustrate product development and product innovation ideas. Invited work has included portraiture and capturing family occasions and events. He is interested in capturing forgotten locations, towns, settlements and historic places. Michael Venter has created photographs and images for display, business plans, project plans, websites, corporate manuals, reports, documentation and marketing and promotional material.
