Ahuriri Conservation Park. The Ahuriri Conservation Park contains over 49,000 hectares of rugged mountain country and vulnerable wetlands, tussock lands and beech and tawhai forest. The diverse wetlands include large shallow pools, oxbow ponds and river backwaters. Oxbow ponds were formed from horseshoe bends left behind when the Ahuriri River changed course. The variety and number of habitats make the Ahuriri Valley wetlands extremely valuable to native fish and birds. Source; Department of Conservation. (edited).

Quailburn Historic Site, MacKenzie Country. Quailburn Station was once part of the vast property known as Benmore Run. In the 1870's this was one of the largest properties in Otago. Sheep mustering on the Quailburn hills was a harsh life. The woolshed shown here is beech pole construction and was built in the 1920s. The yards and race can be seen are still standing. Lindis Pass. MacKenzie Country. The dramatic Lindis Pass links the Mackenzie Basin with Central Otago. The actual pass crosses a saddle between the valleys of the Lindis and Ahuriri Rivers at an altitude of 971 metres above sea level. For many months of the year, you can expect to see snow in this mountainous area - often down to the roadside. The reserve, formed in 1976, was one of the first tussock reserves in New Zealand and is well known for its landscape and photographic values. It contains snow tussock, fescue tussock, red tussock and silver tussock. Source; Department of Conservation. (edited).
